Which English county ground hosted the first Test match in 1880?
Answer
The Oval
Answer
The Oval
The Oval hosted the first Test match played in England, in 1880. The match between England and Australia took place from 6 to 8 September at Surrey County Cricket Club's ground in Kennington, London.
The Oval was established on part of the former Kennington Common, with its first cricket match played in 1845. Its location and Surrey's influence helped make it one of England's major cricket venues. In 1880, the ground became the first English venue to host a match later recognised as a Test, after earlier Tests had been played in Australia.
England won the inaugural home Test by five wickets. The Oval then gained another place in cricket history in 1882, when Australia defeated England there by seven runs. That result inspired the famous Sporting Times obituary for English cricket, the symbolic origin of the Ashes. A common mix-up is Lord's, England's most famous cricket ground, but Lord's did not host England's first Test.
