Jim Laker took all 10 wickets in a Test innings against Australia in 1956.
Laker achieved the feat in the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, from 26 to 31 July 1956. Bowling off-spin for England, he returned 10 for 53 in Australia’s second innings, becoming the first bowler to dismiss every batter in a Test innings.
The match became known as “Laker’s Match.” He had already taken nine for 37 in Australia’s first innings, giving him 19 wickets for 90 runs overall. England won by an innings and 170 runs, and Laker’s match figures remain the best in Test cricket.
His performance was part of a remarkable Ashes series in which he took 46 wickets at an average of 9.60. Only two bowlers have since matched the all-10-wickets-in-an-innings feat in men’s Tests: Anil Kumble for India in 1999 and Ajaz Patel for New Zealand in 2021.
