In Inside Out, the emotion voiced by comedian Lewis Black is Anger.
Anger is one of the five personified emotions guiding Riley, alongside Joy, Sadness, Fear, and Disgust. He is portrayed as a short, red, square-shaped character whose temper can literally ignite when Riley becomes frustrated. Lewis Black’s famously intense, explosive comedy style made him a natural fit for the role, giving Anger a sharp, exasperated voice.
The character is not simply a villain. Anger believes he is protecting Riley from unfairness and disappointment, especially when her family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. His outbursts often represent Riley’s need to push back, although the story shows that relying on one emotion alone can lead to destructive decisions.
A common mix-up is confusing Black with Bill Hader, who voiced Fear, or Mindy Kaling, who voiced Disgust. Amy Poehler voiced Joy, while Phyllis Smith voiced Sadness.
