Which earlier Mesopotamian flood story features Atrahasis, a survivor warned to build a boat?

The story behind the answer

The earlier Mesopotamian flood story featuring Atrahasis is the Epic of Atrahasis.

The Old Babylonian Atrahasis Epic is preserved on tablets dating to the second millennium BCE. In the story, the god Enki warns Atrahasis about a coming flood and instructs him to build a vessel, take aboard living creatures, and preserve life.

Atrahasis’s survival story shares important motifs with later flood traditions, including divine warning, a large boat, a catastrophic deluge, and a survivor who offers sacrifice afterward. Scholars compare these elements with both the Genesis Flood narrative and the flood account in the Epic of Gilgamesh.

The Atrahasis story has its own theological setting. It explains the flood as part of a conflict among Mesopotamian gods and includes a broader account of human creation and population. It should not be treated as simply another name for Noah or Utnapishtim.
