Which Dutch gymnast won 2012 Olympic horizontal bar gold?
Answer
Epke Zonderland
Answer
Epke Zonderland
Epke Zonderland won the 2012 Olympic men's horizontal bar gold medal.
The Dutch gymnast scored 16.533 in the final at London’s North Greenwich Arena on 7 August 2012. Germany’s Fabian Hambüchen took silver with 16.400, while China’s Zou Kai won bronze with 16.366. Kohei Uchimura, although a major star and all-around champion, did not win this apparatus final.
Zonderland’s routine was famous for its difficult release combinations, including Cassina, Kovacs and Kolman elements. His high-risk performance made him one of the most memorable champions of the London Games. He became the first Dutch gymnast to win an Olympic medal in an individual gymnastics event.
The title was especially significant for the Netherlands, whose previous Olympic gymnastics medal had come in 1928. Zonderland later added three world championship high-bar titles, in 2013, 2014 and 2018, and became known as “The Flying Dutchman.”
