Which distillery is famous for having Scotland’s tallest whisky stills?

The story behind the answer

Glenmorangie is famous for having Scotland’s tallest whisky stills.

The distillery’s stills are about 5.14 metres, or roughly 16 feet 10 inches, high. Glenmorangie says they were modelled on tall stills used for gin production, and their height encourages lighter vapours to rise before condensing. The distillery links this design to the elegant, floral character associated with its Highland single malt.

Glenmorangie is located at Tain in Ross-shire, in the Scottish Highlands. Production began there in 1849, and the distillery is now owned by The Glenmorangie Company, part of the LVMH group.

Still height is only one influence on flavour. Water, yeast, fermentation time, copper shape, maturation, and cask finishing also matter. A taller still does not automatically make every whisky lighter, but it is a distinctive engineering feature of Glenmorangie’s production story.
