The Disney theme park known for the giant geodesic sphere, Spaceship Earth, is Epcot.
Epcot opened at Walt Disney World in Florida on October 1, 1982, originally under the name EPCOT Center. Spaceship Earth forms the park’s unmistakable front entrance landmark and also houses a dark ride about the history of human communication. The sphere’s design draws on geodesic architecture associated with inventor and architect Buckminster Fuller.
A common mix-up is treating Spaceship Earth as the name of the park itself. It is the attraction and structure inside Epcot, while Epcot is the broader theme park. The roughly 15-minute ride travels through scenes involving language, cave paintings, Egyptian hieroglyphs, the alphabet, printing, telecommunications and the internet. Epcot’s name came from Walt Disney’s proposed “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow,” although the built park became a celebration of technology and international culture rather than a real city.
