Ariel is the Disney princess who is the daughter of King Triton.
In Disney’s animated film The Little Mermaid (1989), Ariel is the youngest of King Triton and Queen Athena’s seven daughters. Triton rules Atlantica, an underwater kingdom, and strongly disapproves of humans. Ariel’s fascination with the human world drives much of the story, including her secret collection of human objects and her rescue of Prince Eric.
Ariel is based on the mermaid in Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 fairy tale, but Disney reshaped her into a curious, rebellious teenager. She trades her voice to Ursula for human legs, eventually defeats the sea witch, marries Eric, and becomes human permanently. A common mix-up is confusing Ariel with her daughter Melody, who appears in The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. Ariel is the parent in that sequel, not Triton’s granddaughter.
