Which Disney animated film from 1951 is based on Lewis Carroll's novel?

The story behind the answer

The 1951 Disney animated film based on Lewis Carroll’s novel is Alice in Wonderland. It adapts Carroll’s 1865 book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and also incorporates material from its 1871 sequel, Through the Looking-Glass.

The film follows Alice after she chases the White Rabbit down a hole and enters Wonderland, a world populated by characters such as the Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, Caterpillar and Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Walt Disney had considered an Alice project much earlier, but production was delayed while the studio concentrated on other animated features.

Alice in Wonderland was directed by Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson and Hamilton Luske, with Kathryn Beaumont providing Alice’s voice. Its initial 1951 release received mixed critical notices and performed poorly at the box office, but later theatrical reissues—especially the 1974 revival—helped the film gain a stronger reputation. It is distinct from Disney’s later live-action Alice films directed by Tim Burton.
