Which director made Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” music video?
Answer
Jake Nava
Answer
Jake Nava
Jake Nava directed Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” music video.
The video was filmed in New York City in October 2008 and uses a deliberately simple visual concept: Beyoncé, along with dancers Ebony Williams and Ashley Everett, performs against a white background. Its choreography, black-and-white cinematography, and limited setting made the movement especially prominent.
The famous dance was choreographed by Frank Gatson Jr. and JaQuel Knight. Beyoncé’s black leotard and the single-glove styling became closely associated with the performance, while the video’s synchronized choreography spread widely through television, online clips, and parody performances.
“Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” was released from Beyoncé’s 2008 album I Am... Sasha Fierce. Jake Nava had already worked with Beyoncé on other videos, including “Crazy in Love” and “Beautiful Liar.” Melina Matsoukas, another important Beyoncé collaborator, directed “Diva” and “Why Don’t You Love Me,” which is why the directors are sometimes mixed up.
