The song was released in 1999 as the third single from Destiny’s Child’s second album, The Writing’s on the Wall. Beyoncé recorded it with Kelly Rowland, LeToya Luckett, and LaTavia Roberson, although the song’s later music video featured replacement members Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams after lineup changes.

At the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2001, “Say My Name” won Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best R&B Song. Beyoncé later won many Grammys as a solo artist, but this Destiny’s Child success came first. The song is often mixed up with “Survivor,” another major Destiny’s Child hit; “Survivor” received Grammy recognition later, at the 44th ceremony.
