Lindka Cierach created Sarah Ferguson’s wedding dress for her 1986 marriage to Prince Andrew.
Ferguson married the Duke of York at Westminster Abbey on 16 March 1986. Her ivory duchesse-satin gown had a fitted bodice, a full skirt, and an approximately 17-foot train. Its design incorporated symbols associated with the couple, including anchors and waves, as well as a large heart motif.
The dress reflected the elaborate, highly romantic bridal fashion popular in the 1980s. Its scale, satin construction, and long train contrasted with the simpler, more minimalist wedding styles that became prominent in later decades. Cierach, a Polish-born British designer, became closely associated with the Duchess’s bridal look.
The gown is sometimes confused with Princess Diana’s 1981 dress because both were royal wedding gowns with dramatic trains. However, Diana’s dress was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, while Sarah Ferguson’s was designed by Lindka Cierach.
