Maureen Baker created Princess Anne’s wedding dress for her 1973 marriage to Mark Phillips.
Baker designed the gown for Princess Anne’s wedding at Westminster Abbey on 14 November 1973. The dress had a high neckline, long sleeves, a fitted bodice, and a full skirt. It was made from white silk, with Tudor-inspired decorative detailing and a train that extended behind the bride.
The wedding dress reflected the formal royal style of its era but avoided the extreme scale of some earlier royal bridal gowns. Anne’s dress also used embroidery and structured lines rather than relying only on lace or elaborate surface decoration. Her wedding ensemble included the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara, which had been given to her by her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
The designer is often misidentified as Norman Hartnell or Hardy Amies because both men designed important royal clothing. Anne’s 1973 wedding gown, however, is credited to Maureen Baker, who was associated with the fashion house Susan Small. Anne and Mark Phillips divorced in 1992.
