Which designer created Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s minimalist 1996 wedding dress?
Answer
Narciso Rodriguez
Answer
Narciso Rodriguez
Narciso Rodriguez created Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s minimalist 1996 wedding dress.
Bessette married John F. Kennedy Jr. on 21 September 1996 at First African Baptist Church on Cumberland Island, Georgia. Her bias-cut pearl-white silk crepe gown was deliberately simple, with a narrow silhouette, long sleeves, and a high neckline. The design became a landmark example of understated 1990s bridal fashion.
Rodriguez was a close friend of Bessette and was working as a designer at the time. His gown contrasted sharply with the elaborate, heavily embellished royal and celebrity dresses that had dominated earlier decades. Its clean construction and lack of visible ornament helped popularize minimalist bridal styling.
The dress is sometimes incorrectly attributed to Calvin Klein because Bessette worked in public relations for the company and was strongly associated with its aesthetic. The gown, however, was Rodriguez’s design.
