Which descendant of Noah is credited in Genesis with founding Babel?

The story behind the answer

Nimrod is the descendant of Noah credited in Genesis with founding Babel.

Genesis 10:8–10 describes Nimrod as a mighty figure and says that the beginning of his kingdom included Babel, along with Erech, Accad, and Calneh in the land of Shinar. Genesis 10 identifies him as a son of Cush, making him a great-grandson of Noah through Ham.

The Tower of Babel episode follows in Genesis 11, where people build a city and tower in Shinar. Genesis 11 does not repeat Nimrod’s name, but the earlier genealogy connects him with Babel. This is why Nimrod is the canonical answer when the question asks who is credited with founding or beginning that kingdom.

Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions expand Nimrod’s character beyond the brief biblical genealogy. Those later traditions should not be mistaken for the exact details stated in Genesis.
