Which darts tournament is famous for requiring players to start and finish each leg on a double?

The story behind the answer

The World Grand Prix is the major darts tournament famous for requiring a double to start and finish each leg.

In this double-start format, a player’s score does not begin decreasing until a dart lands in any double ring or the inner bull. The player must then reduce the total to exactly zero with another double or the inner bull. This creates a distinctive tactical rhythm compared with ordinary 501 games.

The tournament was first held in 1998 and became one of the Professional Darts Corporation’s most important televised events. It was traditionally staged in Ireland, including at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin, before later venue changes.

The World Matchplay, UK Open, and Premier League generally use conventional 501 rules with a double finish but no double-start requirement. That distinction is the defining feature of the World Grand Prix.
