Which currency is used in Cambodia and has the ISO 4217 code KHR?

The story behind the answer

The currency used in Cambodia and assigned the ISO 4217 code KHR is the Cambodian riel.

Cambodia introduced the riel in 1953, replacing the French Indochinese piastre. The currency was abolished during the Khmer Rouge period from 1975 to 1980, when normal monetary institutions were dismantled. Cambodia reintroduced the riel in 1980 after the fall of Democratic Kampuchea.

The riel is divided into 100 sen, although low-value sen coins and notes are not generally used in everyday transactions. US dollars have also circulated widely in Cambodia, especially for larger purchases and tourism, but the riel remains the national currency.

The word riel is often explained as deriving from a Khmer term for a small fish found in the Mekong. This gives the currency a local connection distinct from the colonial piastre it replaced.
