Which currency is the only official currency of Hungary?

The story behind the answer

The only official currency of Hungary is the Hungarian forint.

Hungary introduced the modern forint on 1 August 1946, replacing the pengő after one of the worst episodes of hyperinflation ever recorded. The reform set 400 octillion pengő equal to one forint, using a number written as 4 followed by 29 zeros. The new currency restored confidence in Hungary’s monetary system.

The forint is named after the florin, a gold coin first minted in Florence. Hungary’s historical connection to the florin gave the word a local form, forint. The currency is divided into 100 fillér, but fillér coins have not been used since 1999.

The forint’s ISO code is HUF. Although Hungary is a member of the European Union, it has not adopted the euro, so the forint remains the country’s legal tender.
