Which currency is Liechtenstein’s official legal tender?
Answer
Swiss franc
Answer
Swiss franc
The Swiss franc is Liechtenstein’s official legal tender. Liechtenstein has a customs and monetary union with Switzerland, formalised by the 1923 Treaty of Customs, so Swiss banknotes and coins circulate as the country’s normal currency.
Liechtenstein does not issue its own national banknotes, but it has issued Swiss-franc coins with Liechtenstein designs. These coins are legal tender in Liechtenstein and are collected internationally, while Swiss coins and notes are used in ordinary transactions.
A common misconception is that every European microstate uses the euro. Liechtenstein is one of the notable exceptions: it uses the Swiss franc, alongside countries such as Switzerland itself. The currency is divided into 100 centimes, also called rappen in German-speaking contexts.
