Which currency is divided into 1,000 baisa in Oman?

The story behind the answer

The Omani rial is divided into 1,000 baisa in Oman.

The rial is Oman’s official currency and has the ISO 4217 code OMR. Unlike many currencies that use 100 subdivisions, the Omani rial uses 1,000 baisa. The Central Bank of Oman issues the currency, whose banknotes and coins carry Arabic and English inscriptions.

The modern rial was introduced in 1970, replacing the Saidi rial at par. Its name is related to the Spanish real, a historical monetary unit that influenced several currencies called rial or riyal. Oman’s currency is among the world’s higher-valued national currency units when measured against the US dollar, though exchange rates change over time.

The Omani rial should not be confused with the Qatari riyal or Saudi riyal. Those currencies have similar names but separate central banks, codes, and subdivision systems.
