Which currency did Zimbabwe introduce in 1980 when it became independent?

The story behind the answer

Zimbabwe introduced the Zimbabwean dollar in 1980 when it became independent.

The currency replaced the Rhodesian dollar at par after the country changed its name from Rhodesia to Zimbabwe. The first Zimbabwean dollar was divided into 100 cents and initially circulated alongside foreign currencies used in the region.

Zimbabwe later experienced extreme inflation, leading to several currency revaluations and multiple issues of banknotes. In 2009, the country effectively abandoned the Zimbabwean dollar for a multicurrency system dominated by foreign currencies.

Zimbabwe reintroduced the Zimbabwean dollar in 2019, but this later currency is part of a separate phase in the country’s monetary history. The original 1980 introduction remains tied to independence.
