Which currency became the official money of Slovenia in 1991?
Answer
Slovenian tolar
Answer
Slovenian tolar
The Slovenian tolar became the official money of Slovenia in 1991. It replaced the Yugoslav dinar after Slovenia declared independence and established its own monetary system.
The tolar was introduced on 8 October 1991, shortly after independence. Its name came from the German word Thaler, the historical source of the English word “dollar” and several related currency names.
The currency was divided into 100 stotinov. Slovenian banknotes depicted important national figures and cultural subjects, while coins carried designs associated with the country’s heritage and natural environment.
Slovenia replaced the tolar with the euro on 1 January 2007, becoming the first former Yugoslav republic to adopt the euro. The tolar is therefore a former currency, not the money used in Slovenia today.
