Which currency became the official money of Croatia when it joined the euro area in 2023?

The story behind the answer

The euro became Croatia’s official currency when Croatia joined the euro area on 1 January 2023.

Croatia replaced the Croatian kuna at the start of 2023 after meeting the conditions for adopting the euro. The conversion rate was fixed at 1 euro to 7.53450 kuna. A short dual-circulation period allowed both currencies to be used for cash payments.

Croatia also joined the Schengen Area on the same date, although membership of the Schengen Area and adoption of the euro are separate European Union processes. The euro’s introduction made Croatia the twentieth country to use the currency at that time.

Croatian euro coins carry national designs, including the checkerboard coat of arms, a map of Croatia and the kuna marten. The kuna’s name referred to the marten pelt once used in medieval trade.
