Which creature is the main antagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Smaug is the main antagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Smaug is a dragon who seized the Dwarves’ hoard beneath the Lonely Mountain and drove the Dwarves from their kingdom. Bilbo Baggins enters the mountain as part of Thorin Oakenshield’s quest to reclaim the treasure. During their conversation, Bilbo discovers that Smaug has a vulnerable area beneath his left breast.

The dragon’s attack on Lake-town leads to the final conflict. Bard the Bowman uses this knowledge, together with a special Black Arrow, to kill Smaug. His death does not end the story: it triggers a struggle among Dwarves, Elves, Men, and Goblins over the exposed treasure.

Smaug is sometimes confused with Sauron because both are major Tolkien villains and both are associated with fire and destruction. Smaug, however, is a dragon in The Hobbit, while Sauron is the supernatural enemy at the center of The Lord of the Rings.
