J.R.R. Tolkien’s unfinished time-travel story about a modern man visiting Númenor was titled The Lost Road. Tolkien worked on it during the 1930s but abandoned the project before completing it.
The story was designed to connect different historical periods through recurring father-and-son names and a form of inherited memory. One strand reaches Tolkien’s legendarium, where Númenor is the great island kingdom of Men that later falls beneath the sea.
The Lost Road was published posthumously in 1987 in volume five of Christopher Tolkien’s History of Middle-earth. It is sometimes confused with The Notion Club Papers, another unfinished time-travel and Atlantis-related work from the same collection. The two projects share themes but are separate texts.
