Which Tolkien work includes the chapter “The Battle of the Pelennor Fields”?

The story behind the answer

The chapter “The Battle of the Pelennor Fields” appears in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Return of the King. It describes the decisive battle fought outside Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring.

The battle includes the forces of Gondor and its allies against the army of Sauron. King Théoden of Rohan arrives with the Rohirrim, and Éowyn defeats the Witch-king of Angmar with help from Merry. Aragorn later reaches the battlefield with reinforcements from southern Gondor and the Dead Men of Dunharrow.

The Return of the King is the third published volume of The Lord of the Rings. Although the title can suggest Aragorn alone, it also reflects the return of several kings and the restoration of rightful rule. The Pelennor battle is not the final confrontation with Sauron; the story continues to the Black Gate and then to the Scouring of the Shire.
