Which Crash game was first in the series to feature full motion videos?
Answer
Crash Nitro Kart
Answer
Crash Nitro Kart
Crash Nitro Kart was the first Crash Bandicoot game to feature full motion videos.
Released in 2003, Crash Nitro Kart followed Crash Team Racing as the series’ second kart racer. Universal Interactive deliberately used pre-rendered cinematic sequences to give the game a more modern, presentation-heavy feel. These scenes introduce Emperor Velo XXVII, establish the forced intergalactic racing competition, and provide story transitions between races.
Red Eye Studios created approximately 32 minutes of cinematics, working from character and environment concepts supplied by Vicarious Visions. The artists produced detailed versions of 27 characters, including Crash, Cortex, Tiny Tiger, N. Gin, and Doctor N. Tropy. This is why Crash Nitro Kart is the canonical answer rather than Crash Team Racing, which used more conventional game presentation despite being the earlier racing title.
The game was developed by Vicarious Visions for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube. Its full motion videos are also distinct from ordinary in-game cutscenes: they were pre-rendered animation sequences made separately from the real-time game engine.
