Which country's flag is solid red with a large yellow star?

The story behind the answer

Which country's flag is solid red with a large yellow star? The answer is Vietnam. The national flag has a plain red field with one large, centered five-pointed yellow star.

The red background is associated with revolution, struggle, and bloodshed, while the star represents the unity of the nation. Its five points are commonly linked with five social groups: intellectuals, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, and soldiers.

The design first appeared during the 1940 Cochinchina uprising against French colonial rule. It was later adopted by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945. The star was modified in 1955, becoming smaller and more sharply pointed, and the flag became the national flag of reunified Vietnam in 1976.

Vietnam's flag is sometimes confused with China's because both use red and yellow and are associated with communist movements. China, however, has five yellow stars in its canton, including one large star surrounded by four smaller ones. Vietnam has only one star, placed in the middle of the field. South Vietnam historically used a different yellow flag with three red stripes.
