Answer
Grey crowned crane
Answer
Grey crowned crane
The bird centered on Uganda’s national flag is the grey crowned crane.
Uganda adopted its present flag on 9 October 1962, the day it became independent from the United Kingdom. The flag has six equal horizontal bands in the order black, yellow, red, black, yellow and red. A white disc at the center contains a grey crowned crane facing the hoist, or flagpole side.
The crane is Uganda’s national bird and was also used as a military badge during British rule. Its raised leg is traditionally explained as symbolizing the country’s forward movement. The bird is not an eagle or another large raptor: its distinctive golden crown of feathers and long legs identify it as a crane. The flag’s colors have commonly been associated with Africa’s peoples, Africa’s sunshine and African brotherhood, with red also linked to the blood connecting Africans.
Uganda’s flag design was created by C. Todd, a professor of Fine Art at Makerere University, and was based partly on the colors of the Uganda People’s Congress.
