Which country's flag has a gold sun with 32 rays above a soaring steppe eagle?

The story behind the answer

Kazakhstan has a flag with a gold sun bearing 32 rays above a soaring steppe eagle.

The modern flag was adopted on June 4, 1992, shortly after Kazakhstan became independent following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Designed by Shaken Niyazbekov, it places the sun and eagle on a turquoise field, with a gold ornamental pattern called qoşqar-müiız, or ram’s horns, along the hoist.

The sun represents life, energy, wealth, and abundance; its rays are shaped like grain to suggest prosperity. The golden steppe eagle reflects freedom, power, and aspiration, while eagle imagery has a long history among Kazakh tribes. Turquoise evokes the open sky, water, and cultural unity among Turkic peoples.

Kazakhstan is often confused with other Central Asian flags, especially those of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Kyrgyzstan has a red field with a sun and tunduk, while Uzbekistan uses horizontal blue, white, and green bands. Kazakhstan’s combination of turquoise, a 32-ray sun, eagle, and ram’s-horn ornament is unique.
