Which country's flag features the red Welsh dragon?

The story behind the answer

Wales is the country whose national flag features a red Welsh dragon. The dragon, called Y Ddraig Goch in Welsh, stands on a field divided horizontally into green and white.

The current flag’s design reflects Wales’s medieval history and the long association of dragons with Welsh identity. A red dragon was carried in Welsh legend and tradition, and medieval sources connected it with the struggle between the native Britons and invading Saxons. The dragon later became linked especially with Welsh princes and rulers.

The modern flag was officially recognized in 1959, although dragon banners had represented Wales for centuries. Its green-and-white background is associated with the Tudor dynasty, whose Welsh origins helped popularize those colors in English royal symbolism.

A common mix-up is to identify the flag as British because Wales is part of the United Kingdom. However, the Union Jack does not include a separate Welsh dragon; Wales is represented there only indirectly because the flag was created before Wales was treated as a distinct component in the design.
