Which country's flag features the Druk, a white thunder dragon?

The story behind the answer

Which country's flag features the Druk, a white thunder dragon? Bhutan.

Bhutan's national flag places a large white Druk across a diagonal division between yellow and orange fields. The Druk is the thunder dragon of Bhutanese and Tibetan mythology, and Bhutan is traditionally known in Dzongkha as Druk Yul, or “Land of the Thunder Dragon.” Bhutanese monarchs are called Druk Gyalpo, meaning “Dragon Kings.”

The yellow half represents civil authority and the monarchy, while orange represents Buddhist spiritual traditions. The dragon's white colour symbolizes purity, and the jewels in its four claws represent the nation's wealth and security. Its snarling expression is traditionally understood as a sign of the kingdom's protective strength.

The flag is sometimes confused with other Himalayan or Asian flags because of its bold central emblem, but the Druk is distinctive. It is not an ordinary European-style heraldic dragon: it comes from Bhutan's Buddhist cultural tradition and is tied to the Drukpa lineage. The current design was formally endorsed in 1972, with its symbolism reaffirmed in Bhutan's 2008 Constitution.
