Which country won the first Olympic football tournament in 1908?

The story behind the answer

Great Britain won the first official Olympic football tournament in 1908.

Football had appeared as a demonstration event at earlier Olympics, but the London 1908 competition is generally recognized as the first official Olympic football tournament. Great Britain won the gold medal after defeating Denmark 2–0 in the final.

The British team was represented by England’s amateur side, reflecting the structure of football at the time. Denmark had advanced impressively, scoring 17 goals in a 9–0 semifinal victory over France B. The tournament involved only a small number of teams compared with modern Olympic football.

Olympic football has changed considerably since 1908. The men’s event later adopted age restrictions, allowing mainly under-23 players with a limited number of older players. Women’s Olympic football was introduced at Atlanta 1996. The first Olympic football tournament should not be confused with the first FIFA World Cup, which Uruguay won in 1930.
