Cuba won the first Olympic baseball gold medal at Barcelona 1992.
Baseball was a demonstration sport at several earlier Olympics, but Barcelona 1992 was the first Summer Games at which it was an official medal sport. Cuba entered the tournament as a powerful international baseball nation and went unbeaten.
The Cuban team defeated Chinese Taipei 11–1 in the gold-medal game at the Estadi Olímpic de Barcelona. The tournament included eight teams and used a round-robin stage before the medal games. Cuba’s deep pitching staff and strong lineup made it the clear champion.
Baseball was removed from the Olympic program after Beijing 2008, then returned for Tokyo 2020, which was held in 2021. Because of those program changes, Barcelona is still the correct answer for the first official Olympic baseball tournament, not an earlier Games where baseball was only a demonstration event.
