Which country won the 1983 Cricket World Cup?

The story behind the answer

India won the 1983 Cricket World Cup.

The tournament, officially known as the Prudential Cup, was held in England and Wales from 9 to 25 June 1983. India entered the final at Lord’s in London against the West Indies, who had won the first two World Cups and were appearing in their third straight final.

India were bowled out for only 183 after captain Kapil Dev’s team chose to bat. The West Indies looked favoured, but India’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding restricted them to 140, giving India a 43-run victory. Mohinder Amarnath was named Player of the Match after contributing with both bat and ball.

The result was a major upset and India’s first World Cup title. It also helped transform cricket’s popularity in India and became one of the most influential victories in the sport’s history. A common mix-up is confusing this tournament with India’s second World Cup win in 2011, achieved at home.
