Brazil was represented by The Secret Agent, winner of Best Foreign Language Film at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards.
The film is a Brazilian production directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. It is set during Brazil’s military dictatorship and follows a man living under political pressure, giving the international award a strong historical and national context.
The category’s nominees represented Argentina, Iran, Taiwan, South Korea, and Spain as well as Brazil. The country labels helped identify the films’ national origins, but the award itself went to the title rather than to a national team or government.
The Secret Agent should not be confused with Squid Game, which won Best Foreign Language Series at the same ceremony. One prize honored a film, while the other recognized television programming.
