Norway produced the original film that Christopher Nolan remade as Insomnia.
Nolan’s Insomnia is a 2002 American remake of the 1997 Norwegian film Insomnia, directed by Erik Skjoldbjærg. Both versions follow a detective investigating a murder in a location where the season’s nearly continuous daylight disrupts his sleep and judgment. Nolan moved the setting from Norway to Nightmute, Alaska, while retaining the story’s central psychological pressure.
Al Pacino stars in Nolan’s version as Will Dormer, a Los Angeles detective sent to Alaska. Robin Williams plays Walter Finch, and Hilary Swank plays local detective Ellie Burr. The film was Nolan’s third feature and his first made for a major Hollywood studio.
The source country is sometimes confused with Sweden or Denmark because the story belongs to Scandinavian crime cinema. However, the original Insomnia was a Norwegian production, and Skjoldbjærg’s film is the specific work Nolan adapted.
