Brazil is the only country to have played in every FIFA World Cup. The Brazilian team appeared at every final tournament from the inaugural competition in Uruguay in 1930 through the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Brazil’s record is especially remarkable because the country has never missed a tournament through withdrawal, failure to qualify or a qualifying play-off. Some editions had unusual qualification arrangements, but Brazil still took part in every World Cup finals competition. The 1942 and 1946 tournaments were cancelled because of the Second World War, so there were no editions for Brazil—or anyone else—to play.
Brazil is also the most successful World Cup nation, with five titles: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. Italy and Germany have four titles each, but both have missed at least one tournament. Argentina, another frequent participant and multiple champion, also has absences.
Brazil’s uninterrupted record began with its first World Cup match against Yugoslavia on 14 July 1930. The team has therefore combined unmatched participation with the competition’s highest title total.
