Which country is Portugal's only land neighbor?

The story behind the answer

Spain is Portugal's only land neighbor.

Portugal occupies the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula, and its entire eastern and northern land boundary is with Spain. The two countries share a border about 1,214 kilometres long, commonly called La Raya or A Raia. Portugal's western and southern sides face the Atlantic Ocean, so no other country touches its mainland by land.

Portugal and Spain have distinct national histories, languages, and political traditions, despite their close geographic relationship. Portugal established its modern borders over centuries and is often described as having one of Europe's oldest stable national frontiers. The border region includes river valleys, agricultural landscapes, and historic fortified towns.

Portugal also includes the autonomous Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. These islands do not create additional international land borders. Morocco is relatively close across the Atlantic approaches and the Strait of Gibraltar, but it does not share a land boundary with Portugal. France and Andorra border Spain, not Portugal.
