Which ancient wonder stood in the harbor of Rhodes until an earthquake toppled it?

The story behind the answer

The Colossus of Rhodes stood in the harbor of Rhodes until an earthquake toppled it.

The giant bronze statue was dedicated around 280 BCE on the Greek island of Rhodes. It represented Helios, the sun god, and commemorated the islanders’ successful resistance to a siege by Demetrius I of Macedon. The sculptor Chares of Lindos is traditionally credited with the work.

Ancient accounts suggest that the statue stood about 30 meters high, making it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world. It was probably placed near the city rather than straddling the harbor entrance, despite the popular modern image of ships passing between its legs.

An earthquake brought the Colossus down in about 226 BCE. The fallen pieces remained visible for centuries, but the statue was never rebuilt. Later writers reported that an Arab force removed and sold the bronze in the 7th century, though details of that account are debated. The Colossus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
