Which country is home to the ancient Great Wall?

The story behind the answer

China is home to the ancient Great Wall.

The Great Wall is a connected system of walls, fortifications, watchtowers, trenches, and natural barriers built across northern parts of China. Construction and rebuilding continued for more than two thousand years, beginning with early defensive walls and expanding under several Chinese states and dynasties.

The best-known surviving sections were built or strengthened during the Ming dynasty, which ruled from 1368 to 1644. These sections often used bricks and stone, while earlier walls could include compacted earth, reeds, and wood. The wall helped regulate movement, protect settlements, and support border defense, though it was never an unbroken barrier that made invasion impossible.

A common misconception is that the Great Wall can be seen from the Moon with the naked eye. It generally cannot. The entire defensive system is thousands of kilometres long, but estimates differ depending on which branches and natural features are included.
