Which mountain is the highest above sea level, rising 8,849 metres in the Himalayas?
Answer
Mount Everest
Answer
Mount Everest
Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level, rising 8,849 metres in the Himalayas. It stands on the border between Nepal and China, with the international boundary passing across its summit.
The mountain is called Sagarmatha in Nepal and Qomolangma in Tibet. Its English name honours George Everest, a former Surveyor General of India, although Everest himself did not name the peak. The mountain's official height was revised in 2020 after a joint Nepal–China survey measured it as 8,848.86 metres.
Everest is not Earth's tallest mountain when measured from every possible starting point. Mauna Kea in Hawaii is taller from its submarine base to its summit, while Chimborazo in Ecuador is farther from Earth's centre because of the planet's equatorial bulge. Everest nevertheless remains the highest point above mean sea level and a major mountaineering challenge.
