Which strait separates Asia from North America between Russia and the United States?

The story behind the answer

The Bering Strait separates Asia from North America between Russia and the United States. It connects the Arctic Ocean's Chukchi Sea with the Pacific Ocean's Bering Sea.

At its narrowest, the strait is about 82 kilometres wide. The Diomede Islands sit near its centre: Big Diomede belongs to Russia, while Little Diomede belongs to the United States. The International Date Line passes between them, creating a striking time difference despite their close physical distance.

During the last Ice Age, lower sea levels exposed Beringia, a broad land region connecting Siberia and Alaska. Archaeologists and genetic researchers associate this region with the movement of ancient peoples into the Americas, although the timing and routes remain subjects of research. The strait is named for Vitus Bering, the Danish explorer who sailed for Russia and explored the region in the eighteenth century.
