Which country hosted the first Paralympic Games in the Southern Hemisphere?

The story behind the answer

Australia hosted the first Paralympic Games in the Southern Hemisphere in 2000.

The 2000 Summer Paralympics were held in Sydney, Australia, from 18 to 29 October. They were the first Summer Paralympics staged in the Southern Hemisphere, extending the movement’s reach beyond its earlier European, North American and Asian hosts.

Sydney 2000 followed the Olympic Games in the same city and helped establish closer operational links between Olympic and Paralympic organizing committees. The Games attracted thousands of athletes and featured a broad programme of summer sports.

The answer is sometimes confused with Brazil because Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2016 Paralympics and was also the first South American host. Australia, however, was the first Southern Hemisphere country to host the Paralympic Games.
