Norway celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday of February.
Norwegian Mother's Day began on February 9, 1919, when the first observance was organized with support from religious institutions. It gradually changed from a mainly religious occasion into a family celebration, with children and relatives honoring mothers at home.
Typical traditions include breakfast in bed, flowers, cards, gifts and a special cake or pastry. The date is not fixed to a particular day of the month: because it is defined as the second Sunday, it shifts from year to year.
Norway's date is easy to confuse with those of its Nordic neighbors. Finland generally celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, while Sweden observes it on the last Sunday in May. Denmark also uses a May date. Norway's February observance is therefore a distinctive calendar tradition rather than a regional Nordic standard.
