Which country's Mother's Day is called Dia das Mães?

The story behind the answer

Which country’s Mother’s Day is called Dia das Mães? Brazil uses the Portuguese name Dia das Mães.

In Brazil, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. The expression literally means “Mothers’ Day” in Portuguese and is the standard Brazilian name for the holiday. It is widely observed with family gatherings, cards, flowers, meals, and gifts.

The first Brazilian observance was promoted in Porto Alegre by the local Associação Cristã de Moços, or Young Men’s Christian Association, on May 12, 1918. President Getúlio Vargas officially established the second Sunday of May as the national date in 1932.

A frequent mix-up is assuming that every Portuguese-speaking country uses exactly the same wording or date. Brazil’s form is Dia das Mães, while Portugal commonly uses Dia da Mãe and celebrates on the first Sunday of May. In Brazil, the holiday is culturally important but is not generally an official public holiday.
