2026 FIFA World Cup
Answer
2026 FIFA World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup caused the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend to start one week later than usual.
The expanded World Cup was played during the summer of 2026, with the final taking place on 19 July. The Premier League therefore began on 21 August rather than using its more familiar mid-August launch window.
The league explained that the revised start provided 89 clear days after the end of the 2025–26 season and 33 days after the World Cup final. That extra recovery and preparation time was particularly relevant because international tournaments involve players from many Premier League clubs.
The altered calendar also affected the shape of the opening round. Arsenal versus Coventry City was played on Friday 21 August, and the round did not finish until Fulham versus Chelsea on Monday 24 August. The cause was the men’s FIFA World Cup, not a domestic cup competition or a UEFA club tournament.
