DC Comics published the main The Powerpuff Girls comic-book series launched in 2000.
The comic expanded the television property into printed superhero stories while retaining the characters, villains, and visual identity familiar from Cartoon Network. DC Comics issued the series during the original show’s run, when the Powerpuff Girls were appearing across multiple forms of media.
The comic-book format allowed the characters to have adventures outside the timing limits of a television episode. Stories could still feature familiar conflicts involving Mojo Jojo, the Gangreen Gang, the Rowdyruff Boys, or threats to Townsville, while presenting the action through panels and speech balloons.
The property’s connection with DC can be confusing because the Powerpuff Girls are not part of the regular DC superhero universe. DC published licensed comics based on the cartoon, rather than making Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup standard members of the company’s superhero continuity. Other publishers have produced related material in different markets, but DC is the key answer for the main 2000 comic series.
