Japan produced the anime spin-off Powerpuff Girls Z.
Powerpuff Girls Z, known in Japan as Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z, reimagines the original Cartoon Network characters in a Japanese magical-girl anime setting. The production was made through a collaboration involving Cartoon Network Japan and Japanese animation companies, including Toei Animation.
Unlike the original series, the anime version does not simply continue the same continuity. Its characters, origin story, powers, and supporting cast were adapted for a new format. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup become superpowered girls after exposure to Chemical Z.
The series aired in Japan beginning in 2006 and later received international releases. The “Z” in the title connects the project to Japanese superhero and transformation traditions, rather than indicating a seventh season of the original show.
