Which company published the 1998 PlayStation game Spyro the Dragon?

The story behind the answer

Sony Computer Entertainment published the 1998 PlayStation game Spyro the Dragon.

The game was developed by Insomniac Games as its follow-up to Disruptor, and Sony Computer Entertainment released it for the original PlayStation. Spyro was part of Sony’s effort to broaden the console’s appeal to younger players and compete with the Nintendo 64, which had become strongly associated with family-friendly platform games.

The publisher is sometimes confused with Universal Interactive, because Universal was closely involved with the Spyro property and Insomniac’s development relationship. Universal Interactive helped commission the project and held important publishing and licensing roles around the series, but the original game’s credited publisher was Sony Computer Entertainment. Later Spyro titles also involved different corporate names, including Vivendi Games and, eventually, Activision.

Spyro the Dragon launched in North America on September 9, 1998, and in Europe on October 23. Its success established Spyro as one of the PlayStation’s signature platforming characters, alongside Crash Bandicoot, and led to two direct PlayStation sequels.
